Installing a floating vanity

A floating vanity hangs entirely off the wall. There are no legs and no toe kick carrying load to the floor — the wall carries all of it. That is what makes the look work, and it is also why installation is not the same job as setting a freestanding cabinet down and levelling it.

This page explains what the work involves so you can judge the job honestly before you order. We recommend professional installation, and installation is not included in the price of any vanity we sell. A licensed plumber or a finish carpenter with plumbing experience is the right person for this.

What the wall has to do

A loaded 48-inch solid-wood vanity with a quartz top, a sink, water in the trap, and a cabinet full of bottles can run 250 to 400 pounds. That load has to land in framing, not drywall.

There are two ways to get there.

Anchoring into studs

The mounting rail or the cabinet’s hanging cleat is lagged into the studs behind the wall. This is the common approach on retrofits where the wall is already closed. It works when the studs fall where the cabinet’s mounting points fall — and often they do not, which is why installers frequently open the wall anyway.

Blocking

A horizontal piece of framing lumber — typically 2×8 or 2×10 — is let into the wall between the studs at vanity height, before the drywall goes on. Blocking gives a continuous solid surface to fasten into anywhere along the cabinet’s width. If your bathroom is already down to studs, put blocking in. It costs almost nothing at that stage and it removes every alignment problem later.

If you are retrofitting into a finished wall and the studs do not line up, an installer will usually cut a strip of drywall, add blocking, and patch. That is normal and it is the right call. It is not a reason to use drywall anchors — toggle bolts and similar anchors are not an acceptable substitute for framing on a vanity of this weight.

Heights and rough-in

There is no single correct height, which surprises people. A floating vanity’s height is a design decision you get to make, which is part of the appeal.

Common ranges, measured from the finished floor to the top of the countertop: standard is 32 to 34 inches; comfort height, the most common choice today, is 34 to 36 inches; and lowered for children or a shorter household is 29 to 32 inches.

Pick the counter height first, then work backwards to the cabinet. Subtract the counter thickness and, if the sink is a vessel style, account for the bowl sitting on top.

Plumbing rough-in then has to land behind the cabinet. The drain — the P-trap and drain stub-out need to sit inside the cabinet body, clear of drawers. On a drawer-heavy floating vanity this is the single most common conflict. Check the drawer cutout diagram for your specific unit against where your drain exits the wall before anyone opens a box. Supply lines — hot and cold stubs should come through the wall inside the cabinet footprint, generally 4 to 6 inches to each side of the drain centreline.

And a warning worth reading twice: if your current vanity has a floor-mounted drain rather than a wall stub-out, converting to a floating vanity means rerouting the drain into the wall. That is a plumber’s job and it is the thing most likely to turn a one-day install into a two-day one. Find out which you have before you order.

Clearances worth checking before you order

Door swing — measure that the bathroom door, the shower door, and any linen closet door clear the vanity at its full depth. Depth — most of our vanities run 18 to 22 inches deep, and in a narrow bathroom a vanity that leaves less than 30 inches of clear floor in front of it will feel tight every day. Side walls — leave a little room at the ends, because a vanity cut to the exact wall-to-wall dimension leaves no tolerance for walls that are not plumb, and few walls are. Outlets and switches — check nothing lands behind the cabinet where you cannot reach it.

Rough sequence of the install

  1. Confirm the wall framing or install blocking.
  2. Mark a level line at the cabinet’s mounting height. Use a laser or a long level — a short level over a 60-inch cabinet will not keep you honest.
  3. Fasten the mounting rail or cleat into framing with structural lag screws.
  4. Hang the cabinet, shim, and verify level across the full width and front to back.
  5. Set the countertop and sink, then seal.
  6. Connect drain and supply, and test under running water with a dry paper towel under every joint.
  7. Caulk the cabinet-to-wall joint and re-check the drawer and door alignment once everything is loaded.

Expect a straightforward retrofit to take a competent installer three to five hours. Add time if the wall has to be opened or the drain rerouted.

Living with solid wood in a bathroom

Solid wood moves with humidity. That is normal and it is not a defect. Run the exhaust fan during and for twenty minutes after showers, wipe standing water off the top and the cabinet faces rather than letting it sit, and expect seasonal movement of a fraction of a millimetre in panel joints. Clean with a damp cloth and a mild soap — never a bleach or ammonia cleaner, and never a steam cleaner.

Solid wood also does something MDF cannot: when it does get wet, it dries. MDF swells at the edges, delaminates, and never recovers, and stripped screw holes in MDF do not hold a second time. That is the whole reason we build the way we do.

Before you order — a short checklist

  • Is the drain in the wall, or in the floor?
  • Where are the studs, and can blocking be added?
  • What counter height do you actually want?
  • Does the vanity depth leave enough clear floor?
  • Do all the doors in the room clear it?
  • Do you have an installer lined up?
